North England Nuclear Decommissioning Opportunities
Annual turnover of the North’s nuclear industry is $5 billion with over 25,000 skilled professionals (10,000 of them employed at Sellafield in Cumbria) working in over 300 companies across the region.
Northwest England is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of nuclear facilities and expertise. Nearly all primary aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle are represented, from fuel enrichment and uranium conversion to energy generation and decommissioning. There are also specialist research groups in the region’s universities.
- Sellafield is the UK’s most advanced nuclear facility and Cumbria has evolved into an international centre for nuclear technology, centered by the HQ of the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)

- The Dalton Nuclear Institute at the University of Manchester is recognised as one of the world’s leading centres of nuclear research and education and includes the Centre for Nuclear Energy Technology.
- The National Nuclear Laboratory with 4 locations throughout NorthWest England from which it identifies and maintains key skills and facilities, and leads with integrating the UK’s strategic nuclear technology programmes.
- Energus, based in Cumbria, is a Centre of Excellence for the provision of skills and expertise for the nuclear and renewable energy industries, spanning both further and higher education. It is widely seen as the flagship delivery arm of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear
